Q:How
do I block e-mail
not addressed to me
using Outlook Express? |
| A: |
A
common property
of junk e-mail
is that the intended
recipient (the
¡§To¡¨ person) is
often not you,
the actual recipient.
These e-mail addresses
are often created
by junk-mailers
and are usually
fake addresses
or phony mailboxes.
|
| |
|
| |
Outlook Express
has a feature
called ¡§Message
Rules¡¨ which allows
you to filter
your e-mail by
specific fields,
such as ¡§From¡¨
or ¡§To¡¨ or ¡§Subject¡¨.
So for junk e-mail
which is not addressed
specifically to
you, Outlook Express
¡§Message Rules¡¨
can be used to
filter out these
junk e-mails.
|
| |
|
| |
This can be
done by specifying,
using ¡§Message
Rules¡¨ that only
e-mails that contain
your e-mail address
in the ¡§To¡¨ or
¡§CC¡¨ fields be
delivered to your
Inbox. The junk
e-mails that are
not addressed
to you can be
left on the e-mail
server deleted
or delivered directly
to your Trash.

Spam mail
is a term for mail that
is unsolicited, contains
repetitive content,
and sent to multiple
recipients at once.
Spam mail usually has
nothing to do with the
recipient and is sent
randomly. Not only does
spam mail cause undue
network traffic due
to its bulk nature,
but it also costs customers
time and money, from
the time and effort
taken to receive, read
and delete spam mail.

| |
| Q: |
How
do the companies who
send this spam mail
know my e-mail address? |
|
| A: |
| 1. |
Self-collecting |
| |
Because many
people on the
Internet have
their own webpages,
and they often
post their own
e-mail addresses
on their webpages,
some e-mail addresses
are obtained by
people who browse
these websites
and collect e-mail
addresses. Another
possibility is
that when posting
to newsgroups
using Usenet or
Netnews, an e-mail
address is required,
and unscrupulous
users can collect
e-mail addresses
from these activities
as well. |
| |
|
| This
process of collecting
e-mail is often
done by scripts
or programs, and
is very hard to
prevent. |
| |
|
| 2. |
Public
collection |
| |
When
you are signing
up for information,
or buying products
online, almost
always you will
asked to enter
your e-mail address.
Occasionally companies
who collect information
from the public
will make their
databases available
for sale, and
these databases
are often purchased
by e-mail spammers. |
| |
|
| 3. |
Occasionally,
e-mail addresses
will be collected
illegally, whether
through hacking
or through taking
advantage of security
leaks. This, of
course, is unlawful,
but it still occurs
occasionally. |
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
| Q: |
Are
there any laws against
sending junk e-mails¡H
|
|
| A: |
| Taiwanese
Internet Service
Providers all
follow the same
guidelines about
junk e-mail. If
a user is found
to be distributing
unsolicited bulk
e-mail, their
Internet Usage
rights will be
disabled and said
user will be unable
to send any more
e-mail. Often,
these users will
attempt to avoid
detection by using
fake e-mail addresses
or creating their
own mail servers.

|
| |
| Q: |
Help!
My server/host has
been hijacked and
is being used to relay
spam mail. What can
I do? |
|
| A: |
| 1. |
Most servers/hosts
do not need
to run a
mail server.
If you do
not explicity
need a mail
server,
disable
and stop
the mail
server service. |
| |
|
| 2. |
If you
really do
need a standalone
mail server
make sure
to add anti-relaying
capability
to your
server software.
Most recent
mail server
software,
such as
sendmail
8.9(+),
already
contains
anti-relaying
capabilities. |
| |
|
| 3. |
If you
have domain
zone control,
or you are
running
a slave/secondary
DNS server¡Ayou
can control
how internet
traffic
is resolved
by using
tools such
as zone
transfer
and BIND.
To learn
more, read
BIND documentation
or visit
the websites
listed below. |

As in
Step 1,
you can
restructure
your e-mail
server and
MX RR(Mail
eXchange
Resource
Record)
to prevent
your e-mail
server from
being abused.
Make sure
that your
mail entry
and mail
server configuration
is correct
to maintain
security
and consistency. |

| Q: |
I
have a UNIX Mail server.
How do I discover
if or prevent my mail
server from being
used as a spam relay¡H |
|
| A: |
| 1. |
If you
are using
sendmail
8.8.x or
earlier,
please upgrade
your version
to 8.9 or
newer, because
the 8.9
(and newer)
versions
of sendmail
have built-in
anti-relaying
capabilities. |
| |
|
| 2. |
If you
do not wish
to upgrade
sendmail
8.8.x to
a newer
version
of sendmail,
you can
go to the
following
website
to add anti-relaying
capability
to your
version
of sendmail.
http://www.phys.ntu.edu.tw/~cwhuang/pub/os/linux/CLDP/doc/anti-spam.html |
| |
|
| 3. |
If you
do not need
all the
features
of sendmail,
try using
simpler
mail software
such as
qmail. Visit
the following
websites
for more
information.
