Recently there have been many incidents of people attempting to steal your password by pretending to be HiNet Support staff. HiNet will never ask you for your password. Please do not indiscriminately download and install free software which may be used to steal your account number and password.

If you suspect that your account has been hacked, or you have previously used a public terminal to access HiNet, or have downloaded suspicious free software, please change your password as soon as possible.

Avoid computers that automatically or surreptitiously dial international numbers.

1. Recently on the internet, there have been incidents of computers being hijacked into dialing international numbers using 56k modems, resulting in very large telephone bills. This type of event occurs because the customer intentionally or accidentally downloads a sort of :dialer; program causing the customer・s computer to dial internationally. This type of software is usually found on adult websites. Once connected to these websites, this software may be offered to you as some sort of free download, but if you run the program, it will disconnect you from your current ISP and secretly dial you into an international location. This software will usually turn off the sound of your modem, so it can connect your computer without your knowledge internationally, resulting in a huge telephone bill. This is sometimes known as :hijacking.;

2. For those using ADSL broadband internet, because ADSL equipment (ATU-R) is different from traditional modems, these software programs will not be effective. However, if ADSL customers have both a modem and an ADSL connection, this software can still use your modem to dial international numbers. We would like to remind you that when you are connecting online without need for a modem, please unplug your phone line from your modem and turn off the power to your modem, to avoid incidents like these from occurring (If a computer has a built-in modem, please unplug your telephone line from your modem.)

3. Because these websites will frequently change their content and their web address, it is difficult to find the names of these websites and prevent these attacks. Thus, ChungHwa Telecom, to protect customer・s rights, has a few recommendations to protect customers from being affected.

a. When browsing websites, do not download unknown files, especially .exe files or pictures.
b. When not online, please turn off the power to your modem.
c. Be careful and observe if your computer has any added software or if its internet configuration has been changed.
d. ChungHwa Telecom service windows (phone number: 123) can give you the ability to setup a password and limit your telephone line・s capability to dial international numbers (IDD).
